Mature Age Study for the Not-So-Mature

Last year I decided to take a big step in changing my career, so I enrolled full-time in university starting in 2014. I’m now, at 38, well into my first year as a Psychology major by distance education, with another two years on my undergraduate degree (and potentially at least a year for a post-graduate degree if I decide to go after official registration).

Aside from getting my head around all of the ins and outs of Uni study (like lectures, essays, exams and where I can get a discount using my student ID card), I find there is one thing that continues to challenge me.

I have the attention span of a fly.

Look, don’t get me wrong – I’m not so bad that I miss deadlines. However, when I sit down to study, I can be distracted by something bright and shiny quicker than you can say ‘concentration’. My current tool of distraction is a delightful mobile app that allows you to coat yourself in makeup/fake tan etc. It turns out that I’m a pretty lady, albeit a pretty lady with a facial hair problem. Anita Shave, if you will.

Anyway, where was I? Oh that’s right, discussing how easily I get distracted.

So… I googled a bunch of articles about tips to overcome distractions, however I got distracted by a weekly email newsletter about Paris, then I started googling accommodation in Paris, then I checked fares for the Eurostar, which led to creating a budget to work out how much I need to save to go to Europe if/when I decide to go.

You can see my dilemma.

So my next few weeks are to be focused on researching anti-distraction techniques that work for me. If you have any tips, I’d love to hear them.

I’ll read them straight after I see what I look like as a blonde…

  1. I suffer from a not dissimilar afflication. I believe Google refers to it as procrastination. I’d love to share some tips with you but I have at least another hour’s worth of time replying to posts. That, and the fact that I live in “The Land of Manana.”
